BRENT CIVIC CENTRE (WEMBLEY), 11th December 2013

The Mayor of Bent, Cllr Bobby Thomas presented awards to over 100 exceptional volunteers who had been nominated by organisations across the borough for their hard work and giving up their time to support the community.

Organised every year by local volunteering organisation Brent Active Citizens (BAC), the 2013 Brent Volunteer Awards Ceremony both recognises and celebrates the work of volunteers in the community. Both the Mayor of Brent and the Leader of the Council, Cllr Muhammed Butt, addressed the audience of volunteer award winners to thank them for the work they and other volunteers do.

Tim Todhunter, from nominating organisation St Luke’s Hospice, said, ‘Thank you for a superb evening and organising the event. We have many volunteers who support our organisation and this is a great way to be able to thank them for all their hard work.’ Award winner Helen Williamson, business volunteer champion from Wembley-based company CSP, said, ‘Thank you for a fantastic evening, it was a great evening and venue! It was great to see and meet so many great volunteers.’

Following the presentation of the awards, entertainment was provided by comedian Geoff Schumann, former Fame Academy singer Audley Anderson as well as a crowd-pleasing comedy performance from Shazia Mirza which included some highly entertaining impromptu banter with the Mayor of Brent.

BAC Chief Operating Officer, Dominic Pinkney, who compared the Awards part of the evening said, ‘What a fantastic and inspirational evening! We are so proud to organise the awards night so that the very many great volunteers of Brent are recognised and celebrated for their work and achievements. Volunteering changes lives and makes a huge difference to our local communities. This is just our way of saying thank you.’ The 2013 Brent Volunteer Awards Ceremony was sponsored by Disney who support the Brent community year after year with their VoluntEARS programme.

Brent Active Citizens is an independent volunteer centre and every year supports over 1,000 local people through a wide range of volunteering related activities and project. Volunteering is a gateway to opportunities, from helping socially isolated and disadvantaged to gain skills, experience and confidence to progress to reach their goals through to peer mentoring for people with mental health issues as well as corporate volunteering from businesses such as CSP, Diageo, Disney and GE.
